Humans can be divided into two groups: Boy Scouts and the rest of us! The Scouts have keenly developed path-finding skills that help them safely find their way through all types of environments. The rest of us rely on luck and on wayfinding signage that’s designed to help us navigate through confusing places.
L&H Sign Company is an award-winning provider of quality architectural sign products. With a 63,500 square foot manufacturing space in downtown Reading, PA, we have the creativity, engineering, craftsmanship and fabrication expertise to design and build everything from simple merchant signs to complex wayfinding signage for customers across the entire Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.
What is Wayfinding?
The term wayfinding incorporates mobility, navigation, planning and many other areas under one umbrella. It’s the overall process involved with getting from one place to another, even if the destination is back at the starting point. Wayfinding is about “finding one’s way.”
Wayfinding is something that all of us do on a daily basis. Even on a route we’re familiar with, e.g., driving to the grocery store or commuting to work, we have to wayfind – around other people, around other vehicles, around accident detours, around the supermarket aisles, and so on.
On vacation, we may have to navigate around an unfamiliar airport, find our way into town, find our holiday resort, navigate around the resort’s facilities, and find the tourist attractions and historic sites we want to visit.
No matter the location, the experience of finding our way can be relaxing, or chaotic and stressful, and intuitive wayfinding signage can make all the difference in the world.
But, there is more to wayfinding systems than just pointing people in the right direction. Wayfinding signs should be eye-catching without interfering, and should incorporate the right combination of color, shape, material and typography to convey a strong message that reinforces a business’ brand identity. This involves graphic design skills and knowledge of the principles and art of communication.
L&H Sign Company’s Expertise
- McDaniel College– L&H Sign Company collaborated on this campus wayfinding project which included exterior vehicular directories, light post banners, campus map directories, building identification signage, and pedestrian wayfinding signs.
- Roschel Performing Arts – We fabricated entrance signage designed by Poulin+Morris for this performing arts center in Lancaster, PA. In a feat of engineering, we utilized multiple rolling functions to create the 2-inch-thick, plate aluminum dimensional letter forms which followed the radius of the building’s circular entryway. The project captured First Place in the Sign of the Times International Sign Contest.
- Vanguard Investment Group – L&H Sign Company fabricated and installed directional signage designed by Cloud Gehshan Associates for this investment management company’s corporate campus, including a monument sign with a brick foundation. The signage family features a very clean panel design without visible fasteners, and a two-tone design featuring Vanguard’s corporate maroon color.
- Wilkes Barre Scranton International Airport– Navigating the outside of an airport is always a challenge. L&H Sign Company fabricated the airport’s new exterior vehicular wayfinding system, entrance monuments, parking garage signs, and terminal directional signage.
